AI is changing your child’s future. Here is how to prepare them at the school stage

Every few weeks a new headline lands that makes parents anxious. Artificial intelligence will write the code, draft the reports, even read the scans. Whole categories of jobs, we are told, may not exist by the time today’s school children grow up. If you have a ten year old at home, it is natural to wonder what on earth you should be preparing them for. The honest and slightly freeing answer is that you cannot prepare your child for a specific job that may not exist yet. What you can do is prepare the child, and that turns out to matter far more.

Stop trying to predict the exact job

The instinct is to pick a safe career and aim the child at it. But the safe careers of one generation are routinely upended by the next, and AI is speeding that churn up. Trying to guess which exact job will survive is a losing game. A child in class 5 today may end up in a role that has no name yet. So instead of betting on a destination, the smarter move is to build a child who can adapt to whatever the destination turns out to be. Adaptability, not a fixed plan, is the real safety net.

What AI struggles to replace

It helps to understand what AI is good at and what it is not. AI is brilliant at patterns, at producing fast first drafts, at handling repetitive and predictable tasks. It is far weaker at genuine creativity, at understanding people, at exercising judgement in messy real world situations, and at asking the right question in the first place. The skills that stay valuable are the deeply human ones. A child who can think clearly, communicate well, work with others, stay curious and handle setbacks will thrive alongside AI rather than be replaced by it.

The skills to build now

At the school stage this is less about technology and more about character and thinking. Encourage the child to ask why and how, not just to memorise the answer. Let them struggle a little with a problem rather than rescuing them instantly, because that is how reasoning and resilience grow. Protect reading, because a strong reader becomes a strong thinker. Give them chances to explain their ideas out loud and in writing, because communication will only become more valuable. And nurture at least one creative or hands on interest, because creativity is exactly where humans keep the edge.

Teach them to use AI, not fear it

There is a temptation to keep children away from AI entirely, the way some parents once tried to keep them away from the internet. That is a mistake. The children who thrive will be the ones who learn to use AI as a thinking partner and a tool while keeping their own judgement in charge. Age appropriately, that means showing an older school child how to use AI to explore a topic, check their reasoning or get unstuck, while making it clear that the thinking, the checking and the final understanding must be theirs. AI should never become a way to skip the learning. It should become a way to go further once the learning is done.

The basics matter more, not less

A common worry is that if AI can do the maths and write the essay, why should a child bother to learn either. The answer is that you cannot direct, question or correct a tool you do not understand. A child who never built strong arithmetic, reading and writing foundations cannot judge whether an AI’s answer is right or nonsense. The fundamentals are not made obsolete by AI. They become the very thing that lets a person use AI well. Skipping them does not future proof a child. It leaves them dependent and easily fooled.

What parents can do this year

None of this needs a tech budget. Read with your child and talk about what you read. Ask open questions at the dinner table and let the conversation wander. Praise effort and good thinking rather than only correct answers and high marks. Encourage a hobby that involves making something. Limit passive screen time, which trains the brain to consume rather than create, and protect time for unstructured play and even boredom, where a great deal of creativity is born. These small, ordinary habits build exactly the adaptable, curious, thinking child the AI era will reward.

Should my child learn to code

A child who sees it as a puzzle worth attempting will lean in, and that single difference compounds across a lifetime. In a world where the specific skills keep changing, the willingness to be a beginner again and again is the real superpower. Praise the trying, the strategy and the recovery from mistakes rather than only the natural talent or the final mark. A child who is comfortable not knowing something yet, and confident they can learn it, is far better prepared for the AI era than one who has simply memorised more.
